Sorbas – La Alpujarra

The Project

Hidden in the hills of Almería, Sorbas is a place shaped by its landscape, its architecture, and, above all, by the people who have made it their home.

Commissioned by the Junta de Andalucía as part of the Levante Almeriense Destination Sustainable Tourism Plan, the project was created to capture the character and appeal of Sorbas through photography, film, and five short-form reels.

I was commissioned to photograph and film the project, as well as oversee the editing and post-production of the video content.

Beyond the Script

The project came with a clear script and a defined set of locations and stories to capture. But from the beginning, we wanted to go beyond simply documenting the destination.

My photography has always been deeply influenced by travel — by the people I meet, the places they inhabit, and the traditions that give each location its identity. That perspective became an important part of the project.

Together with the client, we decided to bring a more human dimension to the story, placing Sorbas’ local artisans at its heart. Rather than simply showing what they make, I wanted to show how they work — their hands, their tools, their concentration, and the spaces where these traditions are still alive.

The village itself became another character in the story. Its architecture, dramatic setting, and unique atmosphere provided a natural backdrop, allowing the images to move between people and place.

Two Days, From Sunrise to Midnight

Everything was photographed and filmed in just two days.

The first morning began before sunrise, with a series of drone shots capturing the village as the first light reached the surrounding landscape. From there, the day unfolded at a relentless pace, moving from one location and story to the next, eventually finishing around 1 a.m. at a local artisan bakery.

The second day was equally demanding, but the weather gave us something we hadn’t had on the first: clear skies and a completely different quality of light. It was an opportunity to revisit some of the locations and capture the warm, directional light that feels so unmistakably southern Spanish — the kind of light that has shaped the visual identity of Andalucía for generations.

The People Behind the Place

Despite the intensity of the schedule, what stayed with me most was the people.

Everyone we worked with was incredibly welcoming, generous, and willing to be part of the process. There was a genuine sense of collaboration throughout the shoot, which made it possible to capture something more authentic than a conventional tourism campaign.

I became particularly close to my local contact, and over the course of those two days, our professional collaboration turned into a genuine friendship.

In the end, the project became about much more than photographing a destination. It was about spending time with the people who give Sorbas its character, and finding a way to tell that story through images.

Two intense days. Long hours. Very little time to stop.

But an experience I wouldn’t have wanted to do any other way.
